External Drive Failed: Data Recovery from USB and Network Disks

Single-drive attached storage options such as personal clouds, USB 3.0 and SATA enclosures are becoming increasingly popular among home users and in small offices. WD, Buffalo, Shuttle, Synology, Qnap and many other manufacturers offer a wide range of sealed and removable-disk, single and multiple-bay solutions. Not all of these are created equal. Some solutions are inherently more feature-reach than others, and some models are more reliable than the rest of the crowd. However, even the most reliable storage will eventually fail or need replacement. In this article, we’ll have a look at what one can do to preserve (or recover) information stored in these systems.

Recovering Data with Read/Write Errors

If you cannot access data stored on a properly configured computer, receiving errors or having your computer freeze for several seconds (or hang up completely), you may have a problem with the hard drive (assuming you’re not having a virus, that is).

Avoiding Data Loss with Removable Storage Devices

There are three simple rules to avoid data loss on removable storage media.

– Use Unmount or Safe Remove to safely eject the device
– Do not remove the storage device while in use
– Disable write cache for removable storage devices

How Data Carving Works

This post continues series of articles about the internal mechanisms of today’s data recovery tools.

In “How Data Recovery Works”, we looked at how file recovery tools can recover deleted files by using the file system. But what if the file was deleted a long time ago, and its file system record no longer exists? Or what if the disk was formatted or repartitioned and the file system is empty or missing? Finally, what if the file system is overwritten by another file system (such as that used by Linux or Ubuntu if you experimented with an alternative OS)? If this is the case, traditional file recovery tools will fail to recover anything.

Recovering Data from Raw Disks

Today’s data recovery tools had come a long way compared to the simple “undelete” of two decades ago. Instead of relying solely on the file system, today’s data recovery tools implement extremely complex algorithms allowing them to successfully recover files from raw volumes. A “raw” volume means that some disk system structures such as the master boot record (MBR) or the file system are damaged, empty or missing entirely. This article describes algorithms that are used recover files from raw disks volumes.

Recovering Data from Formatted Disks

Recovering information from formatted disks, USB flash drives and memory cards requires careful choice of a data recovery tool. Using tools designed to solve a different task may give unpredictable results. In this article, we’ll explain the differences between various data recovery tool in the context of fixing data from a formatted drive.

Recover Data from Flash Memory Cards and FAT/FAT32 Hard Drives

Lost access to a memory card or USB flash drive? Formatted a FAT/FAT32 volume by accident? Deleted a bunch of photos from an SD or Compact Flash card? RS FAT Recovery can recover the entire content of a formatted memory card, USB flash drive or the hard disk if it is (or was) formatted with FAT or FAT32. Advanced recovery algorithms allow complete data restoration from formatted, repartitioned, corrupted and inaccessible media. Continue reading
